Islington Borough Council headquarters is located on Upper Street, with the extensive offices home to a number of departments. On the ground floor – and at the building’s main entrance – is The Islington Customer Centre, which caters for a range of residential enquiries relating to housing, planning, licensing and council tax.
The concrete screed flooring used in The Customer Centre required a complete refurbishment due to many areas suffering from damage and contamination. There was also an increased and unacceptable risk of slipping and tripping. A durable commercial flooring was required to be laid on top of the concrete screed. The product would need to withstand high usage and footfall levels in the Centre, while providing the right balance between safety and aesthetics over an area totalling 900m2.
When we first examined the site, we knew the property would require highly durable flooring – as was apparent from the state of the concrete floor which had deteriorated considerably.”
After careful preparation of the sub layers, the Assura flooring was simple to lay and really helped to visually transform the space. And, given the extremely high footfall, I’m sure the Amtico will prove to be a great investment for the council building and look just as good in years to come.”

After careful consultation between the council officers and Amtico, a specification for the flooring required was suggested and further developed to meet all health and safety requirements. This included high slip resistance, limited long term maintenance, exceptional durability and a highly attractive, modern finish. The Assura range was chosen due to its suitability for busy public areas, with the product’s unique features fulfilling all elements of the specification. The key aspect was the flooring’s enhanced slip resistance which is retained throughout its complete lifecycle. And, as a commercial product, Assura’s guarantee extends to 20 years, offering an excellent long-term investment.
Furthermore, the Assura range offered a number of different designs to ensure the high levels of durability didn’t sacrifice on aesthetics. The project managers settled on a ‘Worn Concrete’ stone finish, which was laid in a tile pattern.
We wanted a high grip, long lasting product, without it looking too much like traditional safety flooring. The Amtico Assura range provides a clean and modern look and I am very pleased with the quality and appearance of the finished flooring.”
Gareth Jenkins, Project Manager at Islington Borough Council
In addition to the main flooring, Amtico also supplied specific entrance matting. The Entryway collection was installed to ensure any soil, moisture and debris was removed – helping to preserve the Assura’s appearance and further limit any slip hazards.
Gary Wills of Amtico flooring was responsible for the project and was extremely pleased with the end result: “This building provided some unique challenges for us as a manufacturer, especially as the Assura flooring covers such a large area. We had to ensure that all the flooring was created in the same batch in order to guarantee a consistent colour and shade match throughout but, as the product is made in the UK, we were able to carefully plan the lead times and delivery.
“Overall, this was a highly successful project, and one which demonstrated how well Amtico flooring can be integrated into a commercial property, without sacrificing on quality or aesthetics.”
