What’s in a pattern?

posted: November 2017

A background of pattern

At Amtico, our obsession with pattern runs more than surface deep.  A floor design can be decorative, geometric or a simple tiled floor. We believe a floor pattern always enhances an interior.

Amtico has been creating pattern for over 50 years, and our designers are focussed on formulating new Laying Patterns that are original and beautiful. These are the shapes – precision-cut in our factory, that are unique to Amtico.

Castel Weave is a new large-scale pattern designed for impact across commercial spaces, drawing on the tradition that comes from the use of elegant wood grains.

With a dedicated team whose working lives revolve around these explorations, we’ve spoken to one of the designers responsible, Sarah Escott.

What is Designers’ Choice and why is it different?

We’ve created Designers’ Choice from our unique laying patterns. These pre-selected colour combinations make the flooring very easy to work with. It’s a curated palette that gives you the ability to create any kind of interior looks and styles.”

“These patterns need to be functional when repeated across a floor, but also we’ve the customer in our mind’s eye, and the effects they want to create in an interior. This is why I think our patterns deliver something of the unexpected.

What is the design approach?

For us, it’s about making sure a product’s surface design flows beautifully across a floor, working with pattern geometry and scale – making it attractive to the eye.” says Sarah.

We’ve loved pushing the cutting capabilities further for this new Designers’ Choice collection – Cubist is just one example.

Cubist, laid in a classic Farmhouse Oak DC282 (left), is also available in a three colour stone mix DC288 (above) for a very different contemporary look.

Sarah continues, The challenge is to push each other to improve and deliver more for our customers. But also for us as designers, it’s about producing beautifully coordinated designs.  I’m really proud of the team, we’ve created versatile, colour-balanced patterns – a real foundation for creativity.

Muralist Graffiti (below, left) DC293 is created with Amtico Signature Basilica Salt, Kura Caraway and Graphite Slate.  Every individual shape in Muralist is cut with a bevelled edge.
