When award-winning architects, Howarth Litchfield, completed the major project of relocating the library and creating a new sixth form hub at the Royal Grammar School in Newcastle, Amtico’s Altitude Carpet and Spacia 36+ LVT collections were chosen to add texture and complement the industrial design.
The new hub now accommodates study and social areas for the 350 sixth form students. Howarth Litchfield was tasked with creating a sophisticated, and less school-like, atmosphere for the students with space to relax and socialise. The multifunctional space blends industrial materials, including exposed structural beams and galvanised ductwork, complemented by the dark grey palette of Sierra Fog and Atlas Fog from Amtico's Altitude collection. These are offset by vibrant furniture in deep mustard, burnt orange and teal.
Altitude, from the Amtico Carpet collection, was chosen for its durability, subtle textures and complementary colourways. The finished result sees Sierra Fog paired with the lighter-toned Atlas Fog to visually separate the social and study areas, and zone the large, open-plan space. The concrete-inspired hues and gentle hint of luxury metallic yarns add flair to the industrial scheme, while the carpet texture softens the space and offers a more calming and relaxed atmosphere.
With the hub expecting up to 350 sixth form students, the new café was in need of practical flooring that could cope with the footfall, while still providing a contemporary aesthetic. Amtico's Spacia 36+ LVT safety floor collection was specified throughout the space due to its enhanced slip resistance credentials and antimicrobial technology, providing peace of mind and helping to prevent slips and trips.
“We used a mixture of Sierra and Atlas from the Amtico Altitude range, and brought in elements of timber with the Spacia 36+ LVT safety floor collection, to complement the rest of the internal finishes. We loved the texture of the designs and how they could be used together. Unlike other products, it’s also a very durable quality for heavy sixth form use but still stylish. We are absolutely delighted with the finished design of the Sixth Form hub and it has been well received by the students and staff at The Royal Grammar School.”
