The stars of the show are the Cooper family: Matthew and his parents Sue and Leigh. Matthew developed a cancerous brain tumour when he was aged just 10, which lead to nausea, headaches and mobility issues. After an emergency operation to remove 90% of the tumour, Matthew was on the road to recovery – until his blood pressure suddenly became unstable, resulting in two massive strokes and paralysis.
Fourteen months later, Matthew completed his final round of chemo and was ready to go home. However, his family home was now ill-suited to provide the specialist recovery environment he required. That’s where the DIY SOS team stepped in!
The house needed a downstairs extension to allow a carer to stay, along with a wet-room, physio space and social space. Matthew needed to be able to access the entire ground floor – otherwise, he would have had to stay at the hospital until alternative accommodation was found, meaning his parents would be forced to return home without him.
We chose to donate our Bleached Elm flooring to help this life-changing home transformation. Why did we choose this floor? Because it’s durable and hard-wearing, making it perfect for busy family life, whilst also remaining stylish and sleek enough to make Matthew’s new home look fabulous.
This expertly chosen flooring will now allow the Coopers to easily keep their floors clean and shiny – all they need to do is a regular sweep, and an occasional mop. This will allow them to dedicate their time and attention to Matthew’s recovery.
We are thrilled with how the final home reveal turned out. We hope you agree that it looks effortlessly stylish and elegant – exactly what Matthew and his parents deserve.
