Choosing your flooring: Q&A with Sarah Escott

Flooring is a key element to any room. As it’s unlikely to be changed for a long time once installed, it needs to suit the décor and be hardwearing, comfortable and practical. Choosing the right floor for your home can be overwhelming, especially if you’re not quite sure what will work for you. We caught up with Sarah Escott, Amtico Design Manager, to discuss how to choose flooring, as well as some top tips and trends to get your space just right.

What advice would you give a homeowner looking at different flooring options? Why is LVT the better choice than real wood for example?

LVT flooring is an investment, and we recognise this. There are lots of economical floor products, but, for us it’s about adding beautiful practicality and value on the investment. A well laid Amtico floor will last many more years than a carpet for instance, it will be easier to clean than a natural product and will also be able to withstand hectic home life. Our LVT will continue to look good over time with a little care, and if you come to sell your home, it’s always worth a mention!

Choosing products and laying patterns can be confusing. Where would you suggest starting? Are there better patterns or colours that work for certain spaces?

When it comes to choosing the right colour for your home, it’s important to take into consideration the building’s age and the feel you want to create, as well as the size of the room you’re decorating. Classical style products, such as distressed and reclaimed woods, tend to suit older properties or those spaces where you want a warmer, homely feel.

When deciding on a laying pattern, scale is possibly the most critical factor. The size of the space and size of the pattern should be compatible. A narrow hallway will suit a smaller scale pattern, like our Décor or our Basket Weave laying pattern, while a larger space will adapt well to bigger designs, like Flagstone.

Looking ahead, what do you think will be the biggest flooring trends?

Colour is a key focus at the moment. We are seeing more ‘mature’ earthy tones and diffused pastel shades becoming popular. Along with this, realistic textures and embosses add depth and realism.

Following the popularity of the wellness and wellbeing trend, we have seen an increase in lighter and fresher colour tones. The macro-trend for natural textures endures, but I think we will be seeing more clever mixes of colour with accent tones to add interest.

In terms of patterns, decorative geometrics are key. Designed to be usable across different spaces: from hallways to living areas and kitchens, our Designers’ Choice collection of pre-defined pattern and colour choice is perfect for people looking to add design interest to their floor.
