Muted and neutral colour schemes remain a staple in high-end interiors, offering enduring appeal and a sense of calm. But far from being dull or one-dimensional, these palettes create opportunities for layering, texture, and clever material choices. Flooring plays a central role in anchoring the look, particularly when balancing style with everyday practicality.
Amtico’s Luxury Vinyl Tiles are an ideal foundation for this design approach. With wood and stone-effect designs that beautifully mimic natural materials, and a variety of laying patterns to suit any taste, LVT brings both adaptability and long-term durability, whether in a heritage renovation or a contemporary new build.
Why Understated Colours Work
Neutral interiors continue to stand the test of time, not just for their aesthetic calm, but for their ability to adapt. Whether you're layering in seasonal accessories or evolving your style over the years, a muted palette gives you room to grow. Interior designer Angela Colley, founder of GeorgieRose Interior Design, explains: “Muted palettes offer a sense of flow and longevity. They allow flexibility to restyle without a major overhaul.”
When working with low-contrast shades, layering is key. By introducing a variety of materials, such as linen, velvet, stone, and soft woods, it’s possible to create interest and depth without overwhelming the space. LVT in soft oak hues, warm greys or weathered finishes can echo these textures while adding a practical, hardwearing foundation.

Texture, Tone and Laying Patterns
Angela prefers wood-look LVT over stone for most of her projects, especially in living areas. “Wood helps to bring warmth,” she says. “It has a gentler feel overall.” For a cooler, airy aesthetic, variations like limed oak can lift the room, while warmer oak effects help bring richness and character.
Laying patterns also play a part, with Parquet and Herringbone being popular choices for neutral décor, as they add subtle movement and visual interest without dominating the space. By contrast, a straight-laid plank format often suits contemporary settings or rooms with more elaborate styling.
Flooring That Works Hard
The beauty of LVT is not just in its appearance. From easy upkeep to underfoot comfort, Amtico floors are made to withstand real life, including pets, kids, and high-traffic areas. That practicality means designers like Angela can specify it in kitchens, hallways, and living zones without compromise.
“I think it’s a really affordable way to create a visually appealing and very hard-wearing alternative to a solid or engineered wooden floor,” says Angela. “It’s soft underfoot, and you can wear heels on it too, that’s a win for me.”
In one of her recent renovations, a Grade II listed apartment in Cheltenham, Angela chose Amtico Spacia Mulled Oak in a Herringbone laying pattern to complement the classic kitchen cabinetry and muted palette. The natural grain detailing and warm accents of the floor helped tie the look together, offering both contrast and cohesion.
