Roundtable: Design Solutions for Supportive Dementia Care Environments

November 2024

In September 2024, we had the honour of co-sponsoring and attending a live round table by Building Insights Live at RIBA. It is estimated that 1-million people will be living with dementia by 2025; the panel discussed improving design of dementia care facilities to better support people living with the condition.

The panel was made up of professionals from multiple disciplines including expert academics, architects and product manufacturers, as well as people who live with Dementia and neurodiversity needs. Our very own Sophia Wise, UK and Ireland Regional Commercial Manager, attended the discussion on behalf of Amtico, and as a co-sponsor had the opportunity to raise their own questions to the panel to better understand the impacts of flooring in dementia care facilities.

It would be wonderful if there was a forum where we could showcase design and ask questions

Sophia Wise, Regional Commercial Manager – UK & Ireland

The panel’s discussion covered key considerations when designing for dementia and the importance of these not just in dementia care facilities, but also within community spaces and inclusive design too.

“We were honoured to host this panel discussion, which revealed not only the many positives of bringing a strong focus to individuals when designing facilities for people living with dementia, but also the considerable shortcomings of the current health system in offering the conditions for such design. This was an important discussion which we hope to create further events and platforms to continue sharing best practice.” – James Parker, Architects’ Datafile Editor.
