Steeped in history, Pearl Yard was once the site of one of Britain’s largest biscuit factories. Co-founded in 1857 by James Peek and George Hender Frean, Peek Frean began as a tea-importing business before expanding into biscuit production in the mid-19th century. In 1866, the company moved to Bermondsey, establishing what would become its iconic factory site.
Bermondsey soon became known as “Biscuit Town,” with Peek Frean producing many beloved classics, including Garibaldi biscuit, Bourbon biscuit, and Custard Cream, alongside its namesake Pearl biscuit.
The factory closed in 1989, marking the end of over a century of production. In the years that followed, the site evolved to accommodate offices, studios, and housing. Today, it has been reimagined by Greystar, offering high-quality rental apartments that blend industrial heritage with modern design, alongside impressive views across London.
